NORTH, is a group portrait of the Latin American émigré community in Toronto. The subjects of this portrait are all people who I have met throughout the years I have lived in Toronto; all are immigrants from Latin America; all have played some significant role in my own story as an immigrant. Through each person in the group I try to reflect on the process of adaptation, integration and resistance that I recognize within my own experience. By photographing my subjects one by one, I inevitably project something of myself onto the others. I do this by posing my own questions and concerns in relation to being an immigrant from Latin America. I search for the different ways in which we do and do not relate to this culture. I try to find our cultural limits and to map out the dimensions of our own mental territories. This is an ongoing project and the portraits take place on the shores of Lake Ontario, as this is the southern edge of the city. By facing the south, I imply what is missing but also what the group chooses to "see" in the landscape.
